How much does a website cost in NZ?

Most small business websites in New Zealand cost somewhere between NZ$1,000 and NZ$5,000 to build. What the build costs is only half the story, though. The bigger difference between quotes is usually what you keep paying every month afterwards.

This guide covers what a website typically costs in New Zealand in 2026, what pushes the price up or down, and the ongoing costs that are easy to miss. We've put our own prices in too, so you can compare like for like.

Typical build prices in New Zealand

Published 2026 pricing guides from New Zealand web designers put most small business websites into three bands. All figures are a rough guide and exclude GST.

Type of websiteTypical build priceWhat you usually get
Starter site, 1 to 5 pagesNZ$1,000 to NZ$3,000A template or light custom design, a contact form and basic Google setup
Custom business site, 5 to 8 pagesNZ$2,500 to NZ$5,000Custom design, service pages, more SEO groundwork and more rounds of changes
Agency buildNZ$4,000 to NZ$8,000 and upStrategy, branding, bookings or shop features, and a larger team

What changes the price

Number of pages

Each extra page needs designing, writing and checking on phones. A one-page site with everything on a single scrolling page is the simplest option. A site with separate service pages costs more, but gives each service its own chance to show up on Google.

Who writes the words

Writing is often the slowest part of a website project, and many quotes leave it to you. If a designer writes the copy, it's usually charged per page. Check whether your quote includes it.

Bookings, shops and forms

Connecting an existing booking tool is usually a small job. An online shop, member logins or custom forms add more work, and the tools behind them often have their own monthly fees.

Photos and video

Good photos make a bigger difference to a small business website than almost anything else. Using your own photos costs nothing extra. A professional shoot is a separate cost, but often worth it.

The ongoing costs people miss

Two websites with the same build price can cost very different amounts over five years. These are the recurring costs to ask about before you sign anything:

  • Your domain name. Every website needs one, and it renews each year. A .nz or .co.nz name usually costs somewhere between NZ$20 and NZ$65 a year, depending on the registrar.
  • Hosting. Some providers charge NZ$40 to NZ$150 a month to keep a site online. A simple, well-built small business site can be hosted for free.
  • Care or maintenance plans. Many agencies add a monthly plan for updates and support, commonly NZ$40 to NZ$100 a month, and sometimes much more. On some plans, the site goes offline if you stop paying.
  • Website builder subscriptions. Do-it-yourself builders are cheap to start, but the monthly fee never ends, and leaving usually means rebuilding.

As an example, a NZ$79 a month care plan adds up to NZ$4,740 over five years. That's more than most small business websites cost to build.

What a website costs with us

We keep it simple: one price to build, and no monthly fee to us afterwards. Copywriting is included in both packages. You give us the basic information about your business, and we write the website content from that.

Questions to ask any web designer

  1. Is copywriting included, or do I need to write the content myself?
  2. What will I pay every month or every year after launch, and what happens if I stop paying?
  3. Whose name are the domain and hosting accounts in?
  4. How much does a small change cost, and how quickly is it done?
  5. If I leave, can I take the whole website with me?

A good provider will answer all five in a sentence each. If you'd like to see how this works in practice, read how a website with no monthly fees works.
